Stolen Harp Recovered Using #Dowsing

In 1991, when her daughter’s rare, hand-carved harp was stolen, Lisby Mayer’s familiar world of science and rational thinking turned upside down. After the police failed to turn up any leads, a friend suggested she call a dowser—a man who specialized in finding lost objects. With nothing to lose—and… Read more

dowsingDowsing: The Skeptics “Fix Wikipedia”
“You can personally correct any Wikipedia article. As long as you can cite references, you can add the best available skeptical information to any article that needs it. When you add footnote references, you can even link directly to skeptical websites. You don’t need anyone’s permission. For simple text edits, you don’t even need web coding skills. Best of all, it’s rewarding and fun to use your skeptical knowledge to enhance an essential public resource.”  [From a website entitled, “Fix Wikipedia”]  The message is directed to “Skeptic Activists”. WiseWiki presents Dowsing like this]

I have been experiencing a steep learning curve in the past fortnight. Oh, have I been wet behind the ears! I had been shocked to find how organised Skeptics were in “fixing” Wikipedia.  With the entry on Dowsing, for example, I noted that there was no reference to Arthur C. Clarke’s Discovery…     Read More

witness boxScience in the Witness Box
I am thinking of giving my forthcoming book
Into the Wider Dream the subtitle, “Synchronicity in the Witness Box.” Why?  Well, if you put people with stories of synchronicity into the witness box, the jury will want to work out how much to trust their evidence. Who will testify for or against such people? Scientists? Yes, but they will disagree with each other.  Other people with similar experiences? Probably. Theologians? Yes, but they will disagree. The jury will probably be most guided by good character witnesses.

 Wikipedia, WISEwiki and more.
Belatedly, I  learned of the existence of WiseWiki.  When I explored the site I was amazed and heartend to find that I had full access to  a
"Digital Library of 217 digitized
and/or online periodical titles dealing with alternative and traditional medicine, consciousness, scientific anomalies, and unexplained phenomena of all kinds."

WiseWiki: dicewThe WISE online Worldwide Resource Center (WWRC) is an independent project initiated by the World Institute for Scientific Exploration (WISE), and is one of the many programs and projects of WISE. The WWRC is a gigantic "wiki" database, directory, encyclopedia (similar to Wikipedia), library, and archive designed to be a comprehensive resource for all topics and subjects, worldwide, related to scientific anomlies, alternative and traditional medicine, anti-aging medicine, consciousness and parapsychology, alternative energy, and unsolved mysteries in science, technology, history, and other fields of knowledge.

mcluhan The planned Wiki of the Society for Psychical Research:

I had heard the the UK SPR were planning a Wiki of their own, and I contacted Robert McLuhan who heads the project. [ I heartily recommend his blog Paranormalia. ]
He kindly responded, "Yes, it's true the SPR is creating an online encyclopedia, one of several publications projects funded by a recent bequest. I wrote about it here.  We're aware of the WISE project, and of course the idea of a joint enterprise has been discussed. I have met with one of the people behind WISE and we both feel that collaboration would be quite problematic, however, as each project has rather different scope and aims. WISE is essentially a giant archive, read on...

Abstract-There exists no simple and satisfactory definition of "science." Such terms as "scientific" are used for rhetorical effect rather than with descriptive accuracy. The virtues associated with science-reliability, for instance- stem from the functioning of the scientific community.

"I have known some first-rate scientists, and they were usually ready to ignore many results in favor of others about which they had hunches, ready to defend their theories vigorously despite the lack of sufficient proof, ready to jump intuitively to conclusions . . . and I have known a few Arrowsmiths, marvelously educated and conversant with the specialist literature, consulted by all, on account of their judiciousnesswho published hardly at all, and never anything of note. The Nobel prize went to Watson and Crick, not to the systematic, judicious, erudite Erwin Chargaff-which seemed unfair to a number of people, including Chargaff himself, who has written in very bitter tones about the manner in which Science nowadays is not as it ought to be." The Spiritual Writings of Howard Jones
Those who claim knowledge of the mystical will always be confronted by the sceptical attitude of those who deny the very existence of the spiritual realm. Claiming to know universal truths by mystical insight alone will not suffice to convince the rationalists. If such a spiritual world-view is to be more widely accepted it must be substantiated by sensory data supported by coherent argument that is compatible with scientific knowledge. To insist on the truth of events that defy not only science but even common sense is not logical in a rational world.
This book seeks to provide a realistic reassessment of the role of religion. It describes a mass of empirical evidence for the existence of another dimension of life – and death. It provides a scientific interpretation in simple terms for continuing discarnate survival of the soul and the phenomena of psi. It shows how human consciousness as part of a holistic cosmic spirituality has evolved through human history. From this emerges a tenable hypothesis of consciousness in incarnate and discarnate existence, for such an approach provides credible evidence for belief in an afterlife. The Death Process as Described by Andrew Jackson Davis

Andrew Jackson Davis (August 11, 1826 – January 13, 1910) is remembered as a “seer” – in effect, a clairvoyant able to enter into a higher state of consciousness and access information otherwise unavailable to humans. In a trance state, he could diagnose illnesses and recommend cures and give lengthy…Read more

Why “Higher Truths” Have Been Rejected By Humans

Why don’t they say something meaningful?  Why not tell us about how they live in the spirit world?  Why not give us a cure for cancer?  Why so much trivial stuff, like what happened to Uncle Jerry’s gold watch?  Such were the questions often asked by skeptics about messages purportedly… Read more
