Mental Illness and the Afterlife

Nahm[Michael Nahm, Basler Psi Verein]

A friend, who has suffered from paranoid schizophrenia for many years, accepts that there is an afterlife, and worries that he will take his disorder with him into the next world. What am I to say to him?

It is an important question indeed for the perhaps 6% of a population who suffer from a serious mental disorder, and for a much greater number who are less afflicted, or less permanently so.   Even so, there is little in the literature of psychic research to help us. Some helpful work has been done, however......continue reading

Perhaps you already know this story: “All fifteen members of a church choir in Beatrice, Nebraska, due at practice at 7:20, were late on the evening of March 1, 1950. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee, and feed on him in thy heart by faith with thanksgiving.”

Probably most of us treat these words as a kind of poetry, suggesting the depth of our communion with the Risen Christ and with each other, and we would be right to do so. Failure to do this, in the past, has led theologians to formulate some very strange dogmas, the source of much dissension.  Read more

marioAmazing Phenomena that Exceed the Boggle Threshold

The search for Truth calls for the spiritual seeker to wade hip-deep through very dense swamplands while enveloped in heavy fog.  Most people – those referred to by existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard as “philistines” – don’t even go there, seemingly content in their mundane world. But…

owenRemembering Patience Worth 100 Years Later —An Interview with Her Foremost Fan

[Amos Doyle]

It was 100 years ago, on July 6, 1913, that Patience Worth first announced herself to three St. Louis, Missouri women experimenting with a Ouija board as their husbands played pinochle in another room.  She told them that she lived “many moons ago,” but did not want to talk about herself, even though the three women pressed for more information about her.  She wanted to provide knowledge and wisdom, which she did.  Over the next 24 years, she would dictate approximately four million words, including seven books, some short stories, several plays, and numerous poems, many in archaic English. Read more

OwenSpirit Communication Problems Further Explained

Posted on 01 July 2013, 9:09

No doubt, a big reason why mediumship is rejected by mainstream science is because of the many distortions, anomalies, inconsistencies, and incongruities in the messages received from the spirit world. The debunkers, in all their shallowness, point out every little glitch, as if they expect it to…

Was William James a wimp?

Much has been written about the contributions of Professor William James of Harvard University to early psychical research and parapsychology.  It was James who took the lead in organizing the American branch of the Society for Psychical Research (ASPR) in late 1884 and then “discovered” medium Leonora Piper, the primary research “project” for the ASPR, the following year.   Without a detailed examination of the research records relating to Mrs. Piper, one might easily jump to the conclusion that James did more than any other researcher to advance the survival hypothesis.  The truth is, however, that he probably did more than any other person of that era to impede it.  Read the article

nicolaModels and Metaphors: The Brain and its Meaning
Nicola Hoggard-Creegan:

[Nicola Hoggard Creegan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Theology, Mission and Ministry at Laidlaw College, New Zealand.  Nicola teaches Systematic Theology and has a particular interest in the interface of science and faith.]
I have recently been reading a number of books that look at the brain and the way it works and its overwhelming influence on the way we picture and nicola1portray and ultimately construct and influence the world. The first is My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey(New York: Viking, 2006), the work of then Harvard neurologist, Jill Bolte Taylor, who had a massive stroke in the left side of her brain. She explains the eight years it took to regain a sense of self, and her previous capacities and powers, including language. She also speaks of the sense of euphoria she experienced when only the right brain was working, and of the re-emergence of a critical voice when the left side began to wake up and be healed. She found herself not liking this voice, and giving it a very limited rein in her new life. Another book of interest is Naming Nature: the Clash between Instinct and Science, by Carol Kaesuk Yoon  Read the article

simonwuSimon S. Wu,    Taiwanese neuroscientist, draws our attention to this link: Decapitated Worms Grow New Heads with Memories Inside.  If you follow him on Twitter:  https://twitter.com/varianexus you will find other thought provoking links. For instance he gives a link to a video: Glen Gould talks about J.S. Bach, which some readers may find a spiritual experience in itself.

This a brief summary of his research at Caltech:. .

In the current paradigm of neuroscience, which treats the brain as an information processing system and neurons as basic computational units, our action is seen as the outcome of information processing in the nervous system. For example, when we heard our phone ring, we can easily reach the hand to grab it without looking. Simon Shauming studied the neural process underlying such action. In the computational paradigm, the research question is reduced to how the location of sound is encoded in the auditory system and how its coordinates are transformed into the coordinates for a motor output such as looking or reaching.

AlmaasFacets  of Unity: The Enneagram of Holy Ideas by A.H.AlmaasHoly Ideas
Reviewed by  John Rhead PhD [Journal for Spiritual and  Consciousness Studies]
"Beneath  the conception of the Enneagram as a personality typology is the idea that it refers to nine different ways in which we become blind to the essential nature of reality. Each of the nine points represents a particular Holy Idea, or attribute of the Divine. These are Holy Love, Holy Perfection, Holy Truths, Holy Omniscience, Holy Will, Holy Wisdom, Holy Origin, Holy Strength, and Holy Harmony. When we are unable to see these holy ideas or attributes of the Divine we become unable to see the underlying love and benevolence of the universe."  Read this review

DonnaHow a "Male Non-Believer" came to believe that a close friend had survived death.

Donna Moncrieffe, director of Metaphysics Research (www.medium7.com) conducts a debriefing with an individual after his first reading with a medium. This individual participated in the reading as part of the "Male Non-Believer" experiments. One of the objectives of this research is to identify and assess evidence of life after death using double blind techniques with individuals who do not believe in life after death.

The superior spirits “have a language always worthy, noble, elevated, with not the least tincture of triviality.  They say everything with simplicity and modesty, never boast, never make a parade of their knowledge or their position among others.  That of the inferior or ordinary spirit has always some reflex human passion; every expression that savors of vulgarity, self-sufficiency, arrogance, boasting, acrimony, is a characteristic indication of inferiority, or of treachery if the spirit presents himself under a respected and venerated name.”    –Allan Kardec  Read

Using spirit sources from Afterlife101.com and respected authors like Michael Newton, Allan Kardec, Jane Roberts and others, the results of our first investigations reveal 94.8% agreement on a variety of very specific topics. We believe this web site contains the largest correlation of spirit communications about the afterlife, all from respected sources, available anywhere. We will continue to expand this data as information is made available to us and our research expands.”
