From the Editor:
One way of describing this journal, is to say that it is studying dimensions of mind, and of consciousness. The term "psychic research" has too narrow a meaning. In studying mind in the way we do, we are very dependent on evidence that would stand up in a law court, or evidence given meaning by the scientific method of hypothesis, and the testing of hypothesis. Such hard evidence can help save us from all kinds of stultifying dogmatism, whether of the philosophical materialist, of the true believer, or of the firmly agnostic. Such open-minded study is the only way of beginning to establish matters of fact.  And in this regard many thousands of  people are immensely indebted to Victor and Wendy Zammit, who have so unremittingly fought to make
established facts known to many thousands of people. I recommend the two articles about them in this issue. The Zammits present the salient facts in each chapter. For greater detail, their book refers readers to a large selection of books indeed.

lawyerA Lawyer Presents the Evidence for the Afterlife
by Victor Zammit and Wendy Zammit

In their book A Lawyer Presents the Evidence for the Afterlife, veteran researchers Victor and Wendy Zammit present highly convincing evidence amounting to proof for the existence of the afterlife. They show how after investigating the evidence, some of the most brilliant men and women, scientists and others, came to the conclusion that we all survive death Read more...

dawkinswilliamsRowan Williams and Richard Dawkins at Oxford

I have been watching a video of the debate between the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams and noted biologist Richard Dawkins at the Sheldonean Theatre, Oxford on February 23, 2012. The topic of the debate was, "On Human Nature and Ultimate Origins." The moderator was Matthew  Kenny. What happened between the two protagonists led me to think how urgent it is that there should be a general understanding of what science actually is, and what it is not.  Read on..

happyIs God Happy?

That’s the title of an interesting article by a Polish philosopher Leszek Kolakowski. But we are not going to get a meaningful answer until we sort out what we are doing when we use the word “God.” Failure to do this poses us with all sorts of insoluble conundrums, including the perennial Problem… Read more

Sacred Geometry and St John

sacredWheels within wheels… there are often hidden layers of meaning in Jesus’ teaching. I am reminded of Luke 8:10 where we read, “And [Jesus] said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others [I talk] in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they…Read more

talbotOn avoiding being one-eyed

Each one of us, from time to time, needs to step back from our customary point of view, and acknowledge that reality is many faceted: We must not become one-eyed about what is real: reality is more than what psychic research reveals, it is more than what churches talk about, it more than scientific… Read more

GraylingThe Soul and Rationality

 by Marion Browne

 [From The Christian Parapsychologist]
[Illus. C.E.Grayling, referred to in essay]

The way in which some modern philosophers, scientists and historians conceal or distort inconvenient facts in order to safeguard cherished hypotheses should worry us all. In medicine, of course, such attitudes can literally be a matter of life and death when research that contra-indicates a particular treatment is never published and other unsuspecting patients suffer avoidable harm. But just as serious is the harm that such deception does to our souls.  Read  essay

Philosophical Discussion  : Evidence Unseen:   The Ethnographic and the Personal

biscopPaul D. Biscop, Ph.D
[Academy of Spiritual and Consciousness Studies]

Among Spiritualists, it is a commonplace saying that, “mediumship proves survival.”  It is through the providing of rich personal details about the communicating spirit that the medium hopes to demonstrate to the sitter in a home circle or private  reading, or to the recipient in a public demonstration, that the medium is indeed in touch with the deceased.  Evidence of survival is accordingly predicated on the provision of  such details as, the spirit’s name (difficult to receive, but not impossible); places, events; shared memories; recognized objects of memory; character traits and peculiarities of language, dress, manners or occupation.   Read the discussion.

Letter from Dr Robert Gilbert, editor of The Christian Parapsychologist
I would appreciate is taking up a little of your space in The Ground of Faith to ask your readers for any information that they may have on the spiritualist activities of the Revd. J.G. Wood. He was an Anglican cleric of the Victorian era (1827 - 1889) who wrote a great many popular books on natural history, including a remarkable study, Man and Beast: Here and Hereafter (1874), in which he argues the case for the immortality of animals. But Wood was very circumspect about his involvement with Spiritualism. He attended seances from the mid 1850s onwards - some of them are briefly described in Newton Crosland's Rambles round My Life and in Mrs. Crosland's memoirs - but I can find no specific details. This was a significant, albeit very private, part of Wood's life that was carefully airbrushed out of his son's hagiography. I would much appreciate any information that may be available as it will help to put flesh upon the bones of this aspect of his life and enable my biography of J. G. Wood (a work long in progress but drawing closer to completion) to portray the man and his ideas as justly and accurately as he deserves. [Please reply to

Mental Healthcare in Brazil’s Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals

.Emma Bragdon Ph.D
[Academy  of Spiritual and Consciousness Studies]
Abstract:   The origin and workings of Spiritist Psychiatric Hospitals in Brazil is described. The practices include: laying-on of hands, prayer, blessed water, fraternal assistance, consultation with medical intuitives and ‘disobsession.'   Trained volunteers donate time as part of their spiritual growth, which makes the treatments cost-effective. The hospitals report many successes and offer a good model of integral mental health care: combining conventional psychiatric care with Spiritist protocols that help patients of all religious and cultural backgrounds. Little standard research on outcomes has been done and more research on the positive impact of the healing practices is called for. Read the article

The superior spirits “have a language always worthy, noble, elevated, with not the least tincture of triviality.  They say everything with simplicity and modesty, never boast, never make a parade of their knowledge or their position among others.  That of the inferior or ordinary spirit has always some reflex human passion; every expression that savors of vulgarity, self-sufficiency, arrogance, boasting, acrimony, is a characteristic indication of inferiority, or of treachery if the spirit presents himself under a respected and venerated name.”    –Allan Kardec  Read
