Note from the Editor: One could say that the essence of religion is to love God with all your heart, all your mind, with all your soul, and  with all your strength, and that you must love your neighbour as oneself. David Howard in his blog below could be said to agree with my blog about Religiously Observant Americans. Is this is so, why should we bother ourselves with the kind of articles in this journal with its miscellany of scientific and speculative studies often not directly related to the spiritual life?  My answer would be that we also need to consider who is doing the loving, and who is being loved. Are we really spiritual beings? What  are the phenomena that give us glimpses of the length, breadth, height and depth of what it means to be a spiritual being?  What are the cultural influences. This is what our journal is exploring. And that is it's limitation.

“Religiously observant Americans are better neighbours”
By many different measures religiously observant Americans are better neighbours and better citizens than secular Americans – they are more generous with their time and money; especially in helping the needy, and they are more active in community life.” Haidt continues, “Whether you believe in hell, whether you pray daily, whether you are a Catholic, Protestant, Jew or Morman,... None of these things are related with generosity. The only thing that was reliably and powerfully associated with the moral benefits of religion was how enmeshed people were in relationships with their co-religionists

whyFundamentalism v. Scepticism: the Middle Way

As a liberal Anglican clergyman, I feel caught between fundamentalists and the clergy who deny the reality of the spiritual dimension. Such clergy really exist! Books published by White Crow can be important in nourishing open-minded churchgoers who have not become materialists. I was invited… Read more

A non-believer convinces another non-believer of life after death

When he was alive in the flesh, George Pellew, an author, poet, and journalist, told Dr. Richard Hodgson, who was studying the mediumship of Leonora Piper, that he could not conceive of an afterlife but that if he died before Hodgson and found himself “still existing” he would attempt to let Hodgson…

The Strange & Bizarre of Materialization Further Observed

In his 1942 book, Life Now and Forever, Arthur J. Wills, Ph.D., a British-born American civil engineer and architect as well as president of the U.S. College of Psychic Science and Research, wrote that he had observed some two-thousand materializations over his years of research and that

Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. James 1:27

With all the hubbub surrounding the resignation and replacement of the pope, it seems like a good time to revisit a theme I've covered here briefly before, namely, the purpose and role of religion as seen by spiritualists and those friends who have communicated with us from the other side of that boundary we call death. Post-Death Experiences and the Emotion of Hope

Callum E. Cooper

hope Abstract: This paper briefly defines the emotion of hope and considers its role in anomalous post-death experiences.  From what research is available, some findings suggest that hope may be present in the after-math of after-death communication (ADCs), along with many other positive outcomes.  All of which may affect percipients psychologically and physiologically, when having been suffering with grief and bereavement.  Some links between post-death experiences and hope are presented which the author intends to investigate further.  Read the article

Einstein at the piano Einstein On Creative Thinking:
Music and the Intuitive Art of Scientific Imagination
Einstein explored time and space… in his musical hobbies.
"The greatest scientists are artists as well," said Albert Einstein (Calaprice, 2000, 245). As one of the greatest physicists of all time and a fine amateur pianist and violinist, he ought to have known! So what did Einstein mean and what does it tell us about the nature of creative thinking and how we should stimulate it? Read the article.

Will Computers Ever be Conscious? by Prof Richard Cocks.
At first glance, imagining that one can answer this question seems highly hubristic.  Who knows? I'm certainly interested in the notion of humanoid robots. Perhaps one can even ask, who isn't?  I enjoy the character of Data in  Star Trek Next Generation. but mostly for the same reasons as the writers of the show - Data's near humanity provides an opportunity to think about in what ways he is NOT human. In other words - what does it mean to be human?  Surely, the most fundamemntal of all philsophical questions

dungbeetleDimensions of Consciousness:
Dung beetles guided by the Milky Way.

When dung beetles roll their tiny balls of poop across the sands of South Africa on a moonless night, they look to the glow of our Milky Way galaxy as a navigational aid, researchers report.

"Even on clear, moonless nights, many dung beetles still manage to orientate along straight paths," Marie Dacke, a biologist at Sweden's Lund University, said in a news release. "This led us to suspect that the beetles exploit the starry sky for orientation — a feat that had, to our knowledge, never before been demonstrated in an insect."    Read on

computerAre We Living Inside a Computer Simulation?

The popular film trilogy, The Matrix, presented a cyberuniverse where humans live in a simulated reality created by sentient machines.
Now, a philosopher and team of physicists imagine that we might really be living inside a computer-generated universe that you could call The Lattice. What’s more, we may be able to detect it. Read on   [Editor: We present this speculation in such a journal as ours, because of the agreement amongst certain physicists, that this world is a projection of a more fundamental order of being. We present it for interest, not for explanation.]

prophetThe Encounter with God:
Prophecy, Spiritualism and the Old Testament
Patricia Doyle

Abstract: Despite many examples in the Old Testament of positive experiences with the spirit world, spiritualism is still viewed by millions of modern Christians with distrust. Sincerely believing that the Bible is the infallible “Word of God,” they quote Old Testament passages as proof that faithful Christians should never participate in spiritualism. Yet biblical prophecy, a form of mediumship, is greatly admired by these same Christians. This essay examines these contradictions and the origin of the ancient Israelite ban on the cult of the dead. Explored also is the connection between spiritualism and prophecy, and the nature of Divine revelation.  Read  the article

JimBeichlerPsience: what new developments in scientific investigation promote understanding of psi?
James E. Beichler, PhD
The study of psychic phenomena is undoubtedly more important to physics than it is to consciousness studies, because it opens new possibilities for studying and learning about the fundamental physical characteristics of the universe. This fact was clearly stated by Gerald Feinberg four decades ago. Feinberg believed that “physicists would be happy for the challenge” posed by studying the paranormal if “new physical laws were involved …” (Feinberg, 22). In this regard, Feinberg posed two questions that need to be answered by physicists: “What is the range of consciousness in the universe?” and “How is consciousness related to the other aspects of the world?” (Feinberg, 22)

The superior spirits “have a language always worthy, noble, elevated, with not the least tincture of triviality.  They say everything with simplicity and modesty, never boast, never make a parade of their knowledge or their position among others.  That of the inferior or ordinary spirit has always some reflex human passion; every expression that savors of vulgarity, self-sufficiency, arrogance, boasting, acrimony, is a characteristic indication of inferiority, or of treachery if the spirit presents himself under a respected and venerated name.”    –Allan Kardec  Read
