universeGood and Evil in the Cosmic Cathedral

Harry Månsus, a Swedish theologian, wrote a book called, The Cosmic Cathedral. [Den kosmiska Katedralen]  The name implies that the universe is one undivided whole, and is holy, and that is the activity of one Mind, Consciousness, Spirit or God, (whichever term we may like to use.) What we call the physical is produced by the activity of this Mind - Mind is not the product of the physical. Many leading Quantum physicists and the mystics of the world’s religions say the same thing. Mind is found in timelessness, and also within time.   Read more

Synchronicity - Who is the playwright?

“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts..”
[William Shakespeare - (from As You Like It)

Yes, indeed, it certainly seems that way… when strange coincidences so often seem to link this incident in our lives to that. Read more

Sheldrake’s The Science Delusion/Science Set Free

The sciences as we know them are weakest when they are dealing with or trying to avoid, the subjective aspects of reality. Our own experience of qualities like the smell of a rose or the sound of the band has been stripped away, leaving only odourless molecular structures and the physics of vibrations. The sciences have tried to confine themselves to I-it relationships, a third-person view of the world.

They have done their best to leave out I-you relationships, second person experiences, as well as first-person experiences,  Read more

When we think about the worlds of spirit and the physical, we need to ask a basic question: What does it mean, to remember? In a supposed afterlife, if John or Mary remembers nothing at all from the past physical life, or any other possible previous life, can John or Mary be said, even, to exist? The evidence is that we do remember. So how do we remember? To remember we need to be conscious.  And Materialist scientists, in spite of the ever-increasing understanding of the structures of the brain, cannot answer the question, how does a brain become conscious? (I discussed this problem in the last blog. It is called, “The hard problem.”) Until we solve that problem, we can’t come to agreement about memory, because we do not usually remember things when we are unconscious. Read more

rivasPhilosopher, Parapsychologist  Titus Rivas responds

Hi Michael, a few years ago I published a paper in which I try to show analytically that there must be a non-physical memory: I think it might be relevant in this context :

[Editor's Note:Here is A brief introduction to Titus Rivas. And
Here is a link to the prolific work of Rivas in the field of psychical research and philosophy. His work is most impressive, and will repay browsing through. The collection is under the heading ofThe Athanasia Foundation  and includes work that he has done in collaboration with others.]

Hallowe’en news from Flat Earth

Hallowe’en has come round again, and it’s time for another silly story about ghosts, spirits, parapsychology and all that gives media hacks their chance to display their ignorance, prejudices and stock of sarcastic comments on anything generally termed ‘psychic’. This year’s silly story came from…

Spirit Communion Within The Anglican Communion

"While we are on the topic of Episcopalians and others in the worldwide Anglican Communion (see our last blog post), I’d like to say a few words about two additional avant-garde clergymen and post a copy of a long-suppressed church report that admitted mediumship is valid. "  Read the kind things he says about The Ground of Faith.
David Howard quotes comedian Robin Williams, on the Anglican/Episcopal church.

Rev Karen E Herrick, PhD, LCSW, LMSW, CADC

JungThe year was 1944 and Dr. Jung had broken his foot.  Then he had a heart attack.  He was taken to a hospital and felt he was on the verge of death.  After his NDE, his nurse reported that while this had been happening to him, “It was as if you were surrounded by a bright glow” (p. 289).  This description from research of nurses describing patients having NDEs in hospitals has been repeatedly reported.  Some also report the glow as being a pale blue in color.      Afterwards, upon checking, Dr Jung realized that a person would have to have been approximately 1,000 miles above the earth, floating in space, to see the sights that came into his view during his NDE.  While he was floating above earth, he saw: ·        “A globe of earth bathed in gloriously blue light.. A deep blue sea and continents.. Read

Why do we keep torturing ourselves with these predictions?
James E. Beichler, Ph.D.

In recent years, the number and intensity of predictions that the world will soon end has risen to a pandemic level. The latest of these predictions – that the world will end on 21 December 2012 – may well be the best known of these predictions, but similar predictions date back more than two millennia and probably longer. This date marks the biggest ever of all the predictions and everyone will be affected by it, no matter what its outcome. Hundreds of books, television documentaries, movies and even more magazine and journal articles have been written about this date, far more than any other event in the history of such predictions. A veritable sub-culture of believers has developed around this particular date. Read

The 13 Most Important Numbers in the Universe

gravitationSome numbers, such as your phone number or your Social Security number, are decidedly more important than others. But the numbers on this list are of cosmic importance—they are the fundamental concepts that define our universe, that make the existence of life possible and that will decide the ultimate fate of the universe. In this piece adapted from his new book Cosmic Numbers: The Numbers That Define Our Universe, California State University, Long Beach, mathematics professor James D. Stein reveals not only the effect each number has on our lives and our universe, but also the story of the people who discovered and worked with them. Here they are, in the order in which science first became aware of them.     Read more: The 13 Most Important Numbers in the Universe - James D. Stein's Cosmic Numbers - Popular Mechanics

sacksOliver Sacks, Exploring How Hallucinations Happen

One day while mountain climbing, he experienced an auditory hallucination after an injury that tore most of his thigh muscle and dislocated his knee. His first impulse was to go to sleep — but then he heard a voice that he didn't recognize yet trusted. " 'No, that would be death,' " he recalls it saying. " 'Go on. You've got to keep going. Find a pace you can keep up and keep it up.' And this was a very clear, commanding voice. It was a life voice, and it was not to be disobeyed."  Read the article  Exclusive First Read: 'Hallucinations,' By Oliver Sacks

Nate CullNate Cull has reservations about  one of  the claims of Rupert Sheldrake in his Science Delusion (above).
I need to footnote this for any readers coming from computer science. The statement "No machine starts from small beginnings, grows, forms new structures within itself and then
reproduces itself." isn't actually true of, and hasn't been since the invention of the von Neumann architecture digital computer in the late 1940s. Read  more.

The superior spirits “have a language always worthy, noble, elevated, with not the least tincture of triviality.  They say everything with simplicity and modesty, never boast, never make a parade of their knowledge or their position among others.  That of the inferior or ordinary spirit has always some reflex human passion; every expression that savors of vulgarity, self-sufficiency, arrogance, boasting, acrimony, is a characteristic indication of inferiority, or of treachery if the spirit presents himself under a respected and venerated name.”    –Allan Kardec  Read
