On the Physical Basis of ESP and Telepathy
by David Brownstein
Abstract: Up to now discussion and testing of Extrasensory Perception have been centered on human experience. However there has been no examination of the physical conditions independent of human beings, without which, ESP would not be possible as a human faculty. This article will attempt to 'put the horse before the cart' by explaining the structure that allows the transmission of something from somewhere to humans. It is also the intention of this article to show how Feeling Telepathy is independent of both Thought Telepathy and Action Telepathy.
Up to now discussion and testing of Extrasensory Perception have been centered on human experience. However there has been no examination of the physical conditions independent of human beings, without which, ESP would not be possible as a human faculty. This article will attempt to 'put the horse before the cart' by explaining the structure that allows the transmission of something to humans. This explanation will detail how all the different types of ESP1 process this ‘something’ from a common transmission source. The second interest of this article is Telepathy, which was coined in 1882 by Frederic Myers to refer to “the paranormal acquisition of information concerning the thoughts, feelings or activity of another conscious being”. It is the intention of this article to show how ‘Feeling Telepathy’ (i.e. the sensing of other people’s feelings) is independent of both ‘Thought Telepathy’ (i.e. the reading of other people’s minds) and ‘Action Telepathy’ (which can be described as the ‘seeing’ of other people’s activities). However, before we can adequately talk about Feeling Telepathy, we must first demonstrate that there exists an underlying foundation, outside of human experience, for all the sub-groups of ESP. Otherwise it would be similar to try explaining how a train is able to move, without mentioning the tracks. We humans have several broadly defined tools for dealing with the world. First there are the five Physical Senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch). Second there is Physical Ability, which we all have varying degrees of. Third we have our Emotions, which deal with our feelings. Fourth we have Beliefs, which involve our unproven convictions. Fifth, we have Reason, which encompasses logical thought2. However, this paradigm is not complete. There is another 'arrow in the quiver' available to us. And that arrow is ESP. The fundamental underpinning of ESP is the Flow of Existence. Just as a river has a flow to it, so does existence itself. This flow is the moment-to-moment movement and then subsequent3 transformation of what exists at that moment. The present moment becomes a past moment and a future moment becomes a present moment. This transformation of moments takes places in a continuous, never-ending repetitive process.4 When a future moment materializes as a Now moment it takes on a Now Essence. This Now Essence is made up of all that which exists in the universe at that point in time. One can pick up and interpret various parts of the Now Essence through the faculty of ESP. Just as the faculty of Reason allows us to have a logical thinking ability, the faculty of ESP allows us to have a Sensing Ability5 which we can use to access the Now Essence. This access is based on one’s ability to be sensitive to another person’s Aura, which all living beings possess and emit. Our Aura encompasses the life force emanating from our Being. The information from our Aura goes into the Flow of Existence. A Sensing Person, acting like a human radio receiver, can pick up these Aura Transmissions from the Flow of Existence. And depending on which specific ESP sub-group ability a person has, various elements of the Now Essence can be picked up. At this point we have reached the 'fork in the road' between the different sub-groups of ESP. The physical foundation of ESP independent of human beings has been explored. We have also looked at Sensing Ability, which exists with people who possesses the ESP faculty. Our interest now is to travel down a path, which has not to my mind been adequately examined before. That path will lead us to an examination of Feeling.
Telepathy (FT), Independent of Thought or Action Telepathy The Sensing ability of FT6 receives and processes the essences of other human's emotions or feelings. They are one of elements making up Aura transmissions. The stronger the Emotion (e.g. intense love, hate, anger or burning sexual desire), the more likely it can be picked up by a Sensing Person. Even while we are sleeping our Aura can be transmitted. Our Aura never sleeps. Regardless of whether we are awake or asleep, the stronger our emotions the more likely they can be picked up. FT is similar to Aura Reading on one level, but it does not involve seeing or picking up different emotional colors from another person’s Aura. Nor is FT trying to interpret what each color means. FT involves specifically sensing another person’s feelings from their Aura. It is also important to distinguish FT from Empathy. A Sensing Person using FT is not attempting to understand the other person's feeling. FT is solely concerned with just sensing the other person's feelings. Of course this does not preclude a FT Sensing Person from wanting or being able to understand those sensed feelings. Interestingly, physical distance from another person is not important in sensing. Sensing is not spatial. It is temporal. It operates in time, the present time. Consequently, once an Aura transmission is emanated from our being it must be sensed at that moment or it is lost. Aura transmissions are a NOW EVENT. In a similar vein to a bloodhound needing to get a whiff of an article of clothing from someone in order to be able to track them, Sensing People need to meet someone first before they can begin to pick up the other's Aura transmissions. Each person's Aura has a unique 'fingerprint' signature or wavelength emanating from his or her unique life force. However unlike a bloodhound, humans with FT Sensing Ability can pick up a person’s Aura from a movie or television show. Even though a person is acting on screen, their Aura is not acting. It is frozen in the Now Moment the movie or television show is made and can be sensed later by a Sensing Person. It is important to note that, although sensing deals in the Now Moment of the present, one can rationally extrapolate from what one senses, to what might happen in the future. The rational method used in extrapolating based on evidence derived from one's intellect or feelings can be used for Sensing Processing as well. Only the source of the data is different. But it must be pointed out here that rationally extrapolating from feelings or sensing is a rational process. It is not to be confused with the actual underlining feelings or Sensing. We humans are born with intellectual and emotional capabilities. Is that true also with Sensing abilities? Yes and no. A small number of people are indeed born with a fully functioning Sensing Ability. Larger groups of people are born with a Dormant Sensing Ability. But people with a dormant ability may not realize that they have it. However if a person does come to realize what they have, then the Dormant Ability can be transformed (as a Developing Sensing Ability) into a fully functioning Ability. However a person will need to want to develop their ability. And once started it normally takes years to reach a fully functioning Sensing Ability status.7 But for a Sensing Person at any level, how can it be verified that what one senses is correct? A very similar process to the one used in verifying logical conclusions, can be employed in verifying sensing conclusions. In the logical sphere, we think about a problem until we either give up or come to ‘feel’ that the solution we have arrived at is accurate. If we do come to a conclusion then we can set about proving or disproving ‘out in the world’ our deductions. It is virtually the same process with sensing. We can try and get a sense about something until we either give up or arrive at a ‘Sense-of-Certainty’8 that what we have sensed is correct. After that we can go out in the world and seek to confirm the correctness of our sense. If we reach the point where our sensing conclusions are validated enough times, we can come to rely on our Sensing Ability in general. Ironically, the biggest obstacle to being able to develop a fully functioning Sensing Ability is one's own Reason. We are used to trying to make logical sense out of the events of the world. However sometimes using FT can and will contradict what Reason would lead us to believe. FT can be at times, in effect, counter-intuitive. In the first few years of developing Dormant Sensing Ability, our bias is to believe Reason over Sensing when the two are in contradiction with each other. After many years though, one can become more comfortable with what one is sensing whether it is counter-intuitive or not. A second challenge occurs when Emotions interfere with Sensing. The most likely time this may happen is when a Sensing Person develops a strong sexual attraction to someone else. It is human nature to want to believe that the attraction is or could become mutual. Sadly though, that is not always the case. In the early years of developing a Dormant Sensing Ability, one can easily fool oneself into believing that we are accurately ‘sensing’ a mutual attraction, when in reality we may only be unconsciously trying to brainwash ourselves into believing it. It takes a long time to be able to distinguish between 'wishful thinking' and true sensing. But when one does acquire a reliable and fully functioning Sensing Ability, one will no longer need to guess whether or not the other person really wants to play 'hide the salami'9 (literally or figuratively of course depending on one’s sexual orientation). A lot of misunderstanding and confusion can be avoided if you can be certain about the motivations of the person sleeping next to you at night. Also, a Sensing person involved in a reciprocal relationship may feel less alone. He or she will not have to wait until they meet their lover to be able to connect up with them. Their lover's Aura probably will contain a fairly consistent flow of feelings toward them (with varying degrees of both good and bad feelings). That is unless for some reason the other person shuts down their feeling to the Sensing Person. But as long as the other is feeling a strong emotion then these feelings can be picked up by the Sensing Lover. Of course some people may feel uncomfortable knowing that their lover can sense their strong feelings toward them. Therefore, one should be circumspect in admitting that one has a Fully Functioning (or even developing) Sensing Ability. At least until the point is reach by the Sensing Person that his/her lover will be able to handle the news. In the case where you have two lovers, both of which are Fully Functioning Sensing people, both will be sending and receiving Emotions. Each lover will be reacting to the other person's reaction. It is like the endless bouncing to and fro of a reflection in two mirrors that are facing each other. There are an infinite number of reflections of mirrors within the mirrors. Hence experiences will be created that did not exist when the two lovers were physically together. This could very well increase the anticipation and satisfaction of lovemaking for mutually sensing lovers. However, it could also cause a lot of confusions as to what is really being sensed. Both the pros and cons of two mutually sensing lovers should be taken into consideration before they decide to go forward with their relationship. Another important benefit of sensing involves the age-old controversy of whether or not God exists. Through Sensing one can be sure whether or not God exists. If God does exist, the Essence of God will be in the Flow of Existence. One will be able to Sense- With-Certainty God's Aura10, just as one can Sense-with-Certainty other people's Auras. It is important to make the point that sensing is different than ‘Believing’ or ‘Knowing’. Sensing that God exists (or not) is different than Believing that God exists (or not) or ‘Knowing’ (through an empirical investigation or rational thought process) that God exists (or not). This of course raises the question that if a person with a fully functioning Sensing Ability does not sense the existence of God, does that mean that God does not exist? If everyone (or at least an overwhelming majority of people) with a fully functioning Sensing Ability were all in agreement as to whether they sensed or not God’s existence then the consensus would be fairly convincing. However it might be possible that God might not want us to be able to sense His/Her Aura and we might come to the wrong conclusion even with consensus. But if we do by consensus sense the Existence of God, then could we also Sense what kind of human behavior God is in favor of or frowns on? This question is very tricky and dangerous. Many religious (as well as other) wars have been fought with the belief that 'God was on our side'. Sensing the existence of God is one thing. Being able to sense God’s preferences for human behavior is beyond the scope of FT. It probably is beyond the scope of ESP in general. However I suppose there is a long shot chance that using some other ESP ability we might be able to glean reliably a few nuggets of God’s Preferences from the Flow of Existence. But I am doubtful. We may have to content ourselves with just being able to sense God’s existence or non-existence accurately. It is inevitable though that sooner or later it will occur that one person will 'Sense' one thing relating to God and another person will 'Sense' the exact opposite. What happens then? At that point, as they say in New York, one of the two (or more) people will need an' Attitude Adjustment' to be able to 'Sense' correctly. For it is not possible for two (or more) people to correctly sense the exact opposite sensing data relating to the same entity. We can have our own personal sensing in relation to how other people feel about us. But on a public matter, sensing must be in agreement to make any sense. If not, then someone is not 'doing it' correctly (as they say in regard to other activities). Actually Incorrect Sensing is due to Incomplete Sensing Development, which could cause a person to draw an erroneous sensing conclusion. Sufficient sensing development takes time. One will (frustratingly) make a lot of mistakes along the way. In fact, in the beginning of developing a Dormant Sensing Ability, most of one's Sensing will almost certainly be wrong. Underdeveloped Sensing can very easily lead one to confuse it with logic, emotions, wishful thinking or 'gut feelings'. 11 True certainty about one's Sensing is acquired gradually. One has to prove to oneself over and over again that the Sensing they are having is indeed correct. This takes years. Researchers Bryan & Harter (1899) have suggested that a ten-year period is necessary to become an expert. However, even if and when one does come to a fully functioning Sensing Ability status, each Sensing Episode must still be verified. One can never take for granted their Sensing Ability or the accuracy of it. One must be aware however that even correctly Sensing-with-Certainty another person's feelings, does not mean we can know their intentions. Intentions are thoughts not feelings, and therefore not subject to being picked up by FT.12 Another person may be passionately in love with one of us, but for whatever reason, he/she may not want to become lovers. Additionally, sensing cannot tell us if the other person is 'hot' for someone else.13 Hence we may sense incorrectly due to not having a fully functioning Sensing Ability. Or our sensing may not give us a complete picture of the other person in areas not pertaining to ourselves. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't attempt to sense about other people or about God. But it does mean we should at least Sense-with-Certainty and maybe then wait some time before we come to any conclusions privately or make any public declarations. Another important consequence of sensing is the discovery of the existence of a third level of human consciousness. I call this level 'Semi-Consciousness' (along with the acknowledged Conscious and Sub-Conscious states of mind). A feeling is in the Semi-consciousness level when we are aware of some kind of feeling but we are not able to pin down the full scope of it. For example, if we are attracted to someone, but it is not personally or socially acceptable for us to be attracted to that person, then we may suppress the entire feeling into our Sub-conscious mind. Or we may suppress just a part of the feeling into our Semi-conscious. In that case we may be only be aware that we feel something (perhaps even strongly) about the person, but we don't let ourselves become fully aware that we are feeling a sexual attraction to him/her, which might be very threatening to us. Consequently if someone with FT is sensing feelings from a person, there could be great confusion about which level of consciousness the feelings are coming from.14 However, given enough time and practice, one should be able to distinguish the actual originating source of consciousness from the other person. Until then one has to be careful in coming to a conclusion as to whether or not someone is interested in us sexually or to what extent. And while anyone should be able to develop a Dormant Sensing Ability, there are people with certain personality characteristics, which make them more prone to be able to develop this kind of ability easier. The most important (and surprising) characteristic of a Pre-Sensing Person15 is someone who has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Such afflicted people may pull on a door 10 times to make sure it really is locked or stare at the drain in a sink after closing the water value because they are not sure that the water is really shut off. Amazingly, the true driving force behind these compulsions is an attempt to re-synchronize one's being with the Flow of Existence. But how can we know that? People who have a fully functioning Sensing Ability can take direct actions to attempt to re-synchronize their being with the Flow of Existence.16 Just as a singer with an ‘ear for music’ know when to jump in and start singing, someone with a fully functioning Sensing Ability senses when and how much to ‘adjust his/her existence’ to re-sync with the Flow. However because a Pre-Sensing Person is unable to take this direct action, he/she often take unconscious and indirect actions when 'his/her train falls off the tracks'. What may seem like a neurotic personality can in reality be someone just ‘a hair’s breadth’ away from realizing Dormant Sensing Ability. It would be an erroneous conclusion to say that everyone who has OCD is a Pre-sensing person. But if one does have a Dormant Sensing Ability, I believe there is a tendency for that person to develop OCD just when his/her dormant ability is about to erupt. The more the Dormant Sensing Ability is developed, the less the OCD will be used to take the place of sensing. Another remarkable yet deceptive character trait is paranoia. At first glance it may appear that a paranoid person may be a ‘Pre-Senser’. A person who ‘feels’ that others are 'thinking bad thoughts' about themselves may actually (yet unknowingly) sense other people's emotions. Therefore these individuals are not really Pre-Sensing but actually beginning the process of sensing, however without realizing it. Therefore they no longer have a Dormant Sensing Ability, but now can be said to have an Erupting but unconscious Sensing Ability.17 Regardless of whether a person has a Dormant or Erupting Sensing Ability, a fully functioning Sensing Ability can be developed given enough time and practice. However the younger one begins the better. Learning anything is easier when one is younger. And secondly, starting early allows one more time (if handled correctly) to benefit from and enjoy whatever ability is being developed. Once acquired through utilizing ESP requires a good deal of energy. When a Sensing Person is ill or overtired it is very likely that they will not have a sufficient amount of strength to sense. The body's primary goal is to get better. Sensing comes second. Additionally if a person is very agitated, one’s ability to sense can be temporarily distracted or interrupted. One may ask though what will happen if bad or evil people learn to sense? Are we handing them a powerful new weapon by encouraging them to learn how to Sense? It is possible. But if one believes that being able to Sense is a Gift from God, it would seem unlikely that bad or evil people would be eligible to receive such a gift. But we cannot say for sure and if it occurred, then I believe there would have to be a higher purpose involved. Therefore, all in all, I believe the more people Sense, the better off all of us will be. Sensing is a reactive, passive and reflective faculty. It is not an offensive weapon. Sensing People are less likely to 'Shoot first and ask questions later'. The answer of how one is to know when to rely on Reason or when to rely on ESP to deal with the world can be found in the old saying: ‘experience is the best teacher’. Whichever tool one comes to use the most, I believe it is safe to say that until a person becomes aware (if it exists) of their Dormant Sensing Ability, what is known of the world is just the 'Tip of the Iceberg'. World history, as well as all our private histories are chock full of examples of actions taken with great confidence but which turned out very, very wrong. I can’t help but wonder how different the world would be if at least some of those decisions where based on more than just logical or emotional conclusions.
2. Stephen Braude, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Scientific Exploration points out that there is a perception of a link between intuition and the paranormal in the scientific and scholarly communities. While I do agree that intuition exists and is a valuable tool for dealing with the world, I see intuition as a sub-group of Reason, not of ESP. If the Flow of Existence did not exist, intuition still would.
3. Stephen Braude also points out that the transformation of the ‘moment-to-moment’ process must be subsequent to and not simultaneous with the ‘moment- to-moment’ process. Something must exist in at least in a ‘Quantum of Time’ before it can be transformed from that existence into something else.
4. I find it interesting that the sixties expression 'going with the flow' was never elaborated on to explain the flow of what? One could guess that the saying was referring to the ‘flow of events’ but it could have just as validly (and perhaps unknowingly) been referring to the ‘Flow of Existence’.
5. A person who has a Sensing Ability may be able to utilize more than one of the sub-groups of ESP. This would be similar to a person with a 'musical ability' who may be able to play more musical instrument.
6. It is important to note that while the words ‘Sensing’ and ‘Feeling’ tend to be used interchangeably, Sensing is a unique and independent ability. It is the act of picking up the Feelings of another person in regards to oneself. Any feelings we may have towards the other person are separate from our sensing what they are feeling towards us.
7. Exactly how one can be learn to develop a Sensing Ability will have to be left to another article.
8. ‘Feeling’ a logical conclusion is correct and achieving a ‘Sense-of-Certainty’ that a sensing conclusion is accurate is functionally identical. I would like to thank my close friend Joan Winters for this keen perception.
9. A quaint New York Italian expression.
10. If God does exist and if we have ‘meet’ God before we actualized (i.e. being born) into our current existence, we could then recognize God’s Aura Signature in the Flow of Existence). 11. Sensing is somewhat like 'having a gut feeling' which we all have from time to time. But feeling something in your gut is not true sensing. One is not certain about gut feelings. One may have a 'hunch' that their gut feeling is correct. But a hunch is not certainty. I would like to thank my friend Joan for also pointing this out to me.
12. Luckily, Sensing is not Mind reading.
13. The mechanism of Sensing involves the opening by the Sensing Person of a corridor between two people, which allows the Aura of the person Sensed through. We have access to only the corridors we create, not those created by others. This of course raises the question of what happens when both people can sense? Is there one corridor created capable of 'two-way traffic' or does each Sensing person create his/her own corridor? In actuality each Sensing Person creates his/her own corridor independently, but because both people can Sense, the effect is ‘as if’ there was one ‘two-way’ corridor.
14. One can differentiate the source of the Aura transmission by the level of intensity of the transmission. Conscious feelings are Sensed more intensely than Semi-Conscious ones. Furthermore, sensing feelings from another person's Sub-Conscious mind is extremely difficult. Sub-Conscious feelings are too weak to be sensed reliably.
15. A Pre-Sensing person is someone who has a Dormant Sensing Ability and unconsciously wants to be able to learn how to Sense.
16. If one is successfully able to re-synchronize one's being within the Flow of Existence, I call this a 'Sync-Lock'. Achieving a Sync-Lock can come in real handy when one is 'having a bad day'.
17. Interestingly an erupting person could ‘feel’ that others are ‘thinking good thoughts’ about themselves just as easily as bad thoughts. For some reason, however the psychology profession has only addressed someone ‘feeling’ being the object of bad but not good thoughts. Therefore I wonder if once known about, would a person who ‘feels’ that others are thinking good thoughts about themselves be classified as having a form of paranoia?
