My long-term friend Dr John Moss, of Middlesborough, UK had died recently after a very long illness, in which his wife Elaine had given him continuous care and love. John was deeply interested in what paranormal experiences might tell us of Christ, and had written a book on this subject.
On April 12 of this year, I received a letter from Elaine, in which she describes the sequence of events occurring on the morning of March 29, 2006, when after several weeks, I had thought to phone her. She had already been clearly seeing his presence, and that morning she had heard his voice. My call prompted her to write this letter telling me what had been happening on a previous occasion when I had phoned. “[Michael was still on the line when] I [Elaine] said to him, "Would you like me to tell Michael that when you get your wings you will try and visit/contact him?" John nodded and smiled benignly. I repeated to Michael what I had said to John, and Michael said that he would like John to try and visit him. John smiled happily and sank back on his pillow. After I put the phone back I thought, 'Well, goodness knows how John will get to Christchurch, New Zealand, unknown house, etc., but where's there's a will there's a way. I suppose the next world has its ways and means', and decided that was John's problem!”
Immediately after reading this I booted up my computer. On a blank screen appeared the words, “I'm not dead.” The computer then failed. I booted up the computer once again, and once again appeared the words, “I'm not dead.”
This is an example of meaningful coincidence or synchronicity. A highly emotionally charged coincidence, deeply meaningful, but something we cannot explain by ordinary cause and effect. “I'm not dead” turns out to be an advertisement for an album by a singer called Pink. On the other hand I don't recall more than a couple of such advertisments ever, and those words at that very moment obviously struck home.
Steven Rosen, formerly a Psychology professor, has been involved in astonishing meaningful coincidence or synchronicity with myself. In Steven's On the subject of love he is exploring the idea that synchronicity and life in general are two sides to the same coin.
Victor Mansfield, a professor of physics, has contributed an article on synchronicity of his own. Lawrence LeShan is quoted when he writes about “two modes” of regarding reality, the sensory-physical and the clairvoyant.. opposite modes of viewing one reality. This would be in line with Rosen's image of the Moebius Strip.Synchronicity makes better sense when we are thinking of the universe from the holistic or clairvoyant mode. Alain Aspect and John Bell are mentioned as presenting a view of reality, backed by rigorous experiment, which support a “two modes” view of reality. These two modes might be seen as corresponding to seeing God either as immanent or transcendent. If we can accept that reality is not divided, but one system, then both ways of regarding God would be right, depending on from which of the two points of view one is looking.
What has all the above to do with Christ, and our faith as Christians? What are we imagining when we use the word Christ? Do we mean the physical Jesus of Nazareth? Do we mean the Risen Christ? If we do, are we still thinking of an individual being who might still appear to us in person, as the angel that is said to have appeared to Mary to announce the incarnation? Or are we agreeing with St Paul, and thinking of a Cosmic Christ? Is perhaps the Cosmic Christ an aspect of the godhead? And what about our ideas of the Body of Christ? Is it our local congregation? Yes. Our church? Yes. Christianity? Yes. Humanity? There's the question. Or even the universe? One Swedish author did call his book The Cosmic Cathedral. Is the activity of Christ mainly confined to what we associate with Christianity, Church, Bible and prayer, and so on? Or is Christ involved in every conceivable way in every human interaction, every physical event that happens? Is Christ Love? Or more than Love, and involved in literally All that Is? Is the information world in all its forms an aspect of Christ? Is Christ to be found in acausal meaningful events? The Rt Rev. Richard Randerson (assistant Bishop of Auckland) asked similar questions in a recent sermon in Christchurch NZ. We give links to two articles, recently written by him, which assert that the peace of the world depends on us all enlarging our vision of Christ to cosmic dimensions. The Rev David Moore emphasises this in his Lenten services. The Rev Bosco Peters writes a notice concerning a new website to do with worship in the 21st Century.
In this issue there is a review of a book about H.D.A Major, who was in his heyday as a leader of the Anglican Modernist movement in the 1920's and 30's. He was concerned to bring a traditional Christianity up to date and in line with the rest of human knowledge.; he fought for a Christianity where the emphasis was on the relationship to Christ and to neighbour, where unfettered reason was permitted in studying the scriptures, and where belief in miracles and the Virgin Birth were less obligatory for the Christian. He deeply valued the comprehensiveness of the Anglican Communion, where differing viewpoints such as that of Evangelical, Anglo-Catholic and so on could co-exist in comparative harmony. He had unwavering faith. But even those who think very highly of Major, will say that he did not take sufficient regard to the dynamics of the interaction between developing and conservative theologies within the church as time went on. For him, one paradigm change seemed enough.
It is the hope of this journal, that traditional Christianity will indeed take to itself what is relevant from science and individual experience. It would not however agree with Major that the main concern is the details of the creeds, or particular interpretations of the Bible. For many reasons varying traditions already will emphasise this or that aspect of traditional theology, and there are often strong feelings as to which emphasis should prevail.
Two valid but apparently contradictory modes in which we can view reality
The sensory-physical: All valid information comes directly or indirectly from the senses. All events happen in space and time. All events have a cause. Causes occur before events. Action takes place only when one entity is in direct contact with another. [“God is transcendent”] Alternate Realities 1976 p.88
2.The wholistic: All objects and events are part of the fabric of total being and cannot meaningfully be separated from it. The most important aspect of any object or event is that it is part of the total ONE and it is to be primarily considered under this aspect. Considering it under any other aspect is an error. [“God is immanent.”] Alternate Realities 1976 p.92 Both 1 and 2 are valid.

Editor, Michael Cocks writes: Twenty-five years ago my wife and I experienced a series of extraordinary meaningful coincidences with Steven Rosen, who previously had been a stranger to us. I give fuller details under the heading Experience later in this issue, but the gist of only one set of these coincidences, is that, although he had no knowledge of the existence of my Swedish wife to be, on the day of our engagement I received a letter from him, where he listed a series of coincidences personal to himself, which he thought might be connected to myself. These included the words weird Valentine (weird means supernatural, therefore supernatural Valentine), March 17 my fiancée Gertrud's Swedish name day, and Lesley, the name of the woman friend of a man boarding with me at the time. The coincidences seemed to imply that at some deeper level the professor was aware of Gertrud, of the man boarding with me, and that we would decide to become engaged on a particular day, so that he could post the letter sufficiently in advance of the day to arrive in time.
His letter was particularly striking because of a large number of mind baffling coincidences that my wife-to-be and I had already experienced that day. Now this may not be immediately obvious to the reader, but this may lead us into another look at what Christ meant when he spoke of the Vine and the branches, or St Paul when he spoke of the Body of Christ.
Steven is not a Christian, but of course we are considering experiences that can plausibly be regarded as underlying any encounter with spiritual depth. Anyhow, about the time that he and I experienced these strange synchronicities, he was finishing a novel called The Moebius Seed, where he is in fact addressing the question, "What is the nature of reality, that such synchronicities happen?" In this issue, Steven is contributing a most readable chapter from this novel, On the subject of love. In this chapter he is suggesting that these synchronicities imply a dimension of reality where we are more truly linked together in love. Someone has remarked that synchronicities are the poetry of relationship. They invite us to think and feel again about aspects of the height and depth and width of the love of God. Physicist Vic Mansfield (below) wrote : "This suggested hidden unity of the inner and the outer worlds. . . is not easily understood or experienced. I argue that it requires us to transcend the psyche, to consider ourselves more than finite psychological beings.” Read these Quotes
In brief: Victor Mansfield is Professor of Physics at Colgate University near Syracuse, NY, and has written a valuable book on meaningful coincidence, Synchronicity, Science and Soul-Making. [Open Court, 1995, 5th printing 2001]. In the following, he describes how many features of a strange dream came true later in reality; the features include teaching a small group of people in a glass room, the presence of his former doctoral superviser whom he had not seen for some time, and fear of rejection as a physicist for his writing on meaningful coincidence, or synchronity. We may note however that Einstein himself did not dismiss such happenings, that Wolfgang Pauli experienced many such happenings and was a friend of Carl Jung, that physicist David Peat also writes on synchronicity, together with physicist David Bohm. Those looking through the window of Christianity, will likely see such phenomena in terms of Holy Spirit, Membership of the Body of Christ, Predestination, or the will of God. Whatever the viewpoint, it is the same phenomenon, the same event.

In his sermon for 1st Sunday in Lent, David began, "A former Archbishop of Melbourne Frank Woods had a favourite saying: "Only God is a Catholic." To those for whom the description 'catholic' matters, this saying cuts deeply. Having staked our claim to a territory we want to jealously guard, having pinned our reputation on a party label, this saying exposes us. For we have written cheques, as it were, that our bodies cannot cash. The truth is that our ways are actually exclusive. Many people would find us far from catholic -universal, all embracing, of the whole."
Similarly David argues that , "only God IS Evangelical". Evangel means Good News, God is the Good News, rather than the people calling themselves evangelicals. "Only God IS Pentecostal" . God's Spirit is in All that is, not merely in Pentecostals. "Only God IS Charismatic" God's gracious gifts are similarly for all. "Only God IS Fundamentalist" Only God known through Christ, is the rock and foundation on which we build. Not self-chosen self-interpreted Bible quotations.
David writes, "The Jesus who is lifted up, that all the world may have eternal life, is 'anonymous', in the sense of being 'disguised' in every human life - Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, whatever. The Word has become flesh, for all time, that the world may be made whole, not carved up into little bits."

General note: Physics, and especially its branch Quantum Mechanics, investigate the fundamental nature of reality. It could be considered the most scientific of the sciences, the most based on measurement and mathematics. So when leading theoretical physicists come up with theories where the physical and spiritual is seen as aspects of one totality, the parts of which are in instant communication with all other parts, they are not being fanciful. They are basing their ideas on much tested measurement and mathematics. For some of these leaders, meaningful coincidence or synchronity, is entirely consistent with their understanding of reality. Einstein thought in the light of his understanding of physics that it was reasonable to investigate both coincidence and ESP. Victor Mansfield, Wolfgang Pauli, David Peat, and David Bohm are amongst the physicists who have made deep study of coincidence, and have written about it.
Of course we need to distinguish between an ongoing enterprise of reasoned science, and the direct spiritual experience. Just as when physicists study the nature of sound, they will not in fact have anything helpful to say about the spiritual impact of a Beethoven sonata. But there again, physicists are human too, and as humans they can indeed grasp the spiritual aspect of the sonata.

Bell's Theorem showed that either the statistical predictions of quantum theory or the principle of local causes is false. It did not say which one is false, but only that both of them cannot be true. However, Alain Aspect since verified these statistical predictions. Therefore the concept of global causation, rather than local causation, prevails. The theorem developed from work on the Einstein-Podolski-Rosen Thought Experiment which demonstrated particles of energy that have been together responding at above the speed of light to each other, regardless of time and distance.
There is much too much here to be quickly absorbed, but it is reasonable to suggest that, in thinking about strange meaningful coincidences, or synchronicities, we should not be too quick to make up reasons why they occurred. As Christians we might be tempted to say that we are participants in the Body of Christ, in the Communion of Saints, and that is why they happen; or that it is guidance by the Holy Spirit, or that Steven Rosen and others are "psychic", or that Fate is at work, or that it is in the stars. In glancing through the above, we will find many other alternative explanations.
There may well be a rightness about every one of these alternatives, and in that case the lesson is that Christian may be led to consider that we should avoid thinking of the Risen Christ, or the Holy Spirit, too simplistically. What is right about seeing these events as the Holy Spirit at work, is that it feels like that, and very personal. We need to think whether physicists and mystics are looking at two sides to the same coin, whether a particular language is appropriate at one time, and something else at another. J B Phillips wrote a book called Your God is too Small. There could be another one written called Your understanding of Christ is too Simplistic.

It might be said that the general value of this book is that it helps our understanding of the internal tensions and dialogue within the Church of England as it tried to come to grips with a changing world between 1900 and 1940 where the Church seemed to be gradually losing its authority and was needing to come to grips with the varying views of reality emanating from scientific method, and a changing society. It also throws some light on New Zealand church history. In preparing this book, there has been thorough and exhaustive research, which has also provided a large number of end-notes of considerable interest in themselves. Clive Pearson, Allan Davidson and Peter Lineham are to be congratulated on producing such a readable, interesting and informative book. Read this personal review <Major.html>
Victor MacGill on Signs and Synchronicity
Maori culture often mentions tohu or signs. A tohu is something that appears in the physical world to give a message. Often, for example, a bird is a tohu bringing a message, such as telling of a death. Different creatures bring different messages, so an owl or a fantail are often associated with a death. there are also particulatr creatures, which are linked to certain families or tribes.
There are also links between the weather and events in our lives. There is particularly a link during funerals, where either a soft rain or a heavy downfall occurs at the time of burial or other critical times during the funeral..I have witnessed this time after time. There are countless stories told of poeple knowing of deaths before the news could possibly have reached them. A tohu is also often seen at the time of, or shortly after the burial or cremation of a person. In my own case a tohu came after the funeral of my uncle. Having been to the funeral, we returned to my mother's house where we were staying. Immediately when the car stopped outside the house, a monarch butterfly landed on the windscreen and stayed for around a minute, during which time I greeted it as a representative of my uncle before his spirit left on its journey. This could just be a coincidence, but I have never had a monarch butterfly land like that, let alone stay for around a minute. A tohunga or shaman is trained in the many tohu and can read them to understand why a person has a particular problem and can then take steps to remedy the situation.

In brief: In New York, Stephen is writing a novel centering around synchronicity. He comes to a point where he wishes to have the musical notation of the Five Notes of the Close Encounters UFO. Immediately the mail arrives with a journal in it. In the journal is an article by Michael Cocks, and in that article is that musical notation. This is the first of a number of such striking coincidences between us.
[Michael Cocks writes, "Early on October 11, I sent off a long letter to Mary Rose [Prof in Philosophy, Baltimore, Maryland] telling her what had happened up to now, thinking that surely the curious non-causal synchronisations of thought and actions would have climaxed and ceased.
The full story: The same morning U.S. eastern time, a professor of psychology of whom I had not heard, [Steven Rosen] was writing a letter to me, telling of an experience which led him to believe that he was spiritually connected to us. He had phoned Mary Rose to get my address.
On that morning he had written to me as follows:
"I have had an experience that might interest you, one I would like to share. But first, let me introduce myself. I am a college professor in the City University of New York. My interest - really a passion - centres on the transpersonal, evolutionary aspects of parapsychology, and of science (e.g. theoretical physics, foundational mathematics in general. For the past several years I've been working towards expressing my theme in a way that would communicate to a broad-spectrumed audience. I've been writing a "metaphysical novel" that deals essentially with these synchronistic linkages attending the evolution of consciousness.
"Last Wednesday afternoon, I was working in the basement office of my New York suburban home, feeling enthusiastic about approaching the climax of my project. The three central characters, in the course of their development, have just listened to the theme "Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. "Sandy" remarks that it reminds her of the movie "Close Encounters". I want to portray her as SINGING the five-note musical signature phrase. Can I use musical notation in my manuscript? Specifically how would it be done? (I do not know musical notation).
"At that moment, my father-in-law called down to me, telling me that the mail had just arrived. I opened the envelope from the ARPR [Academy of Religion and Psychical Research], removed the latest issue of the Journal, thumbed through its pages and quickly discovered your article on synchronicity by spotting your splendid musical staff!
"(I should add that, like the "Trance personality" you speak of, I too have done some thinking about the ["Christ of relationship of the] "Space Between". In fact in 1976, I presented a paper to the Institute of Parascience in London which was entitled "Self-Transforming Consciousness: Bridge between Dimensions." Moreover Mary Rose is planning to publish a kind of update of this paper in the April, 1983 issue of the Academy's journal.)
In the last line of your article, you speak of the "network of synchronicity," and that is precisely the thrust of my novel, the goal I've set myself as I enter the climactic sections: to describe the emergence of such a network on a global scale. Since I began work on the concluding phase of my project, the literary problem has been to merge the fictional narrative with a non-fictional account of the synchronistic formation of the global network, and the effect this non-linear, transpersonally inspired network would have on the critical world situation. Little did I expect to get the small taste of fiction-become-fact that apparently has been given!"
The writer is called Steven Marc Rosen. (His book is called "The Moebius Seed" and was published by Stillpoint, New Hampshire, in February 1985.At that time it was proposed to make a film of the novel.)
My article to which Steven links to his need for the musical notes. And I am fascinated by the way that he links to me. He writes on the fateful October 11; he gets my article on our synchronistic October 6, when several surprisingly meaningful coincidences occurred. His coincidences are between him and us, and between him and Mary Rose, in several ways, both on October 6 and 11. He synchronises also with Peter Hayden [boarding with me at the time] in that both he and Peter are writing novels on the same unusual theme.
And lest we guess that chance is a factor in the coincidence of dates, I myself am hardly in constant communication with Mary; as for Steven, he tells me that he is rarely in communication with her.

In brief: I have just read about the thinking of physicist David Bohm, and had decided that he would be important to me in understanding my experiences. Five minutes later I find Steven Rosen's book in the mail box. Under Acknowledgements I find my name printed alongside that of David Bohm.
The full story: I was lying in bed reading Fritjof Capra's "The Turning Point: Science, Society, and the Rising Culture."  I read pages 87-89 on the physicist David Bohm's "The Implicate Order" whose starting point in his theories is the "unbroken wholeness" of reality. Capra wrote that Bohm's aim "is to explore the order he believes is inherent in the cosmic web of relations at a deeper, 'non-manifest' level." (I don’t have a date for this incident, but in the incident I noted that Bohm depicted a reality consistent with the synchronistic picture presented in this book.) I got out of bed. Went to the mailbox at the gate. There was a parcel from England, and in it is the newly published novel by Steven Rosen, It is called "The Moebius Seed, A Visionary Novel of Planetary Transformation". Steven and I had become friendly because of repeated synchronicity between us.
I opened the book at page 8: Acknowledgments. I see David Bohm's name in the first line. What a coincidence. Then I see my own name printed underneath David Bohm's (and alongside Arthur C Clark's). It surprises and moves me to see an apparent orchestration from another level of consciousness, with my reading exactly the right page of the right book at the right time, then to go out and get the novel linking my name with the name of the person about whom I have just heard.

The full story[p.144] Yes, I have enjoyed the company of Peter, living with me in my country vicarage the last eighteen months. We were both tired of living alone, and both of us had done so for seven years.
Now, to have a friend to share with was fine, but a proper family life would be better... and about the same time I was drawn to my friend Gertrud, Peter was drawn to Lesley with whom he set up house. It was plain to both Gertrud and myself that we were two very similar people, having almost everything in common, and we noted much synchronicity between us.
On April 5, Gertrud and I announced our engagement to her daughter Kari, and also to her nephew Thomas who had been staying with her for some weeks.
Gertrud, Thomas and I set out early that morning by car, and after one kilometer we had to slow down because another Mary Rose known to us was crossing our path. She lived way across town.. yet here she was, by her name to remind us of our connection to our friend in the U.S.
On the same day Gertrud visited a city bookshop, and the first book that she sighted was called "Mona Lisa" and it was by a Mary Rose STORY, and then she came home and found a pamphlet on her bedroom floor advertising a communications laboratory by a Mary Rose someone else.
On that same day Gertrud received a notice from a Swedish insurance company: A life insurance policy worth 2440 kronor had matured. Her father had taken it in her name when she was a child. Her father had died several years before our engagement, but now on our engagement day, that notice felt like a handshake of congratulations from him.
On that same day when I returned home to Hororata, there was Peter. "Lucky you, having all those confirming synchronicities," said he, "but what about Lesley and myself?"
But then I found that during that same day a letter had arrived from the USA from Steven Rosen of New York. Amongst other things he wrote this paragraph:
"Now something else. I was drafting this letter to you on March 19th. On the morning of the 20th I awoke with a very vivid recollection of the tail end of a dream: I'd received an old book as a gift and on the title page there was a handwritten inscription saying WEIRD VALENTINE and signed MARY LAND. Thinking about the dream later, I naturally thought of our Mary [Rose] in Maryland. But then I remembered that on the previous Thursday night, MARCH 17th, ST PATRICK'S DAY, a student gave me as a gift an old psychology book from 1913. This student's name is Leslie (my daughter's name is Lesley and we have just celebrated her birthday on the 20th) Carman. (Mary Rose's middle name.)"
Thus Peter gets his wanted synchronicity for his Lesley.
"MARCH 17" is St GERTRUD'S DAY (Gertrud's Name Day)
"VALENTINE" needs no explanation.
"WEIRD" can mean "supernatural" or in Shakespeare or in Scotland, it can mean a Fate. It suggests that we have to do with a "supernatural" valentine, that marriage is our "fate."

John had written a book describing how spirit communicators had interpreted Christ and his teachings, including a description of the teaching of the Stephen of my book.
April 2006. In brief: I had just received a letter from my now widowed friend in Middlesborough, in the UK, Elaine Moss. I had just read the following excerpt from this letter:
[Michael was still on the line when] I [Elaine] said to him, "Would you like me to tell Michael that when you get your wings you will try and visit/contact him?" John nodded and smiled benignly. I repeated to Michael what I had said to John, and Michael said that he would like John to try and visit him. J ohn smiled happily and sank back on his pillow.
After I put the phone back I thought, "Well, goodness knows how John will get to Christchurch, New Zealand, unknown house, etc., but where's there's a will there's a way. I suppose the next world has its ways and means", and decided that was John's problem!
Immediately after reading this I booted up my computer. On a blank screen appeared the words, I'm not dead. The computer then failed. I booted up the computer once again, and once again appeared the words, “I'm not dead.”
The full story: On April 12 of this year, I received a letter from Elaine, in which she describes the sequence of events occurring on the morning of March 29, 2006:
Elaine's Letter: "I awoke at 5 am, too early to get up, so tried to go back to sleep, but my mind was very restless. At 6 am I commenced a prayer routine, 'The Armour of Light', which I have done daily for years... I must have dozed off, for I dreamed that I was down in the kitchen, back door open, and saw John working his way round some boxes to get to the garage door into the kitchen. He seemed to be holding his hands up a little. (He would not expect there to be boxes, and was, I felt, fed up with them.) Perhaps a hand was up to open the door handle? Then I quite defintely heard him say, "Hello." "Oh, that's John" went through my mind, and I woke up with a jerk hoping that I had not missed anything. I noted that the time was 6.50... I was pleased to hear John's voice, but also amused at his irritation with the boxes! I had to work fast to get the washing moving and the place sorted out, and did not have much time to think about it all, except that this was the first time I had heard his voice since last summer. (2005).
The morning went well. I took the washing into the garden to hang out, check the greenhouse - sniff the wind. I came in about 11 am. to get a hot drink. The phone rang, and it was Michael. He told me his news, he had been having a lot of synchronicities. I then said that I had seen and heard John that morning, and asked what time had he decided to ring. Perhaps it was six hours earlier.. thus his decision would have been near the time of my experience with John.
Michael telephoned early September last year when John was very poorly indeed. I put the cordless phone to his ear and he held it there as long as he could concentrate. I then took the phone back from him, and as he could no longer speak, said to him, "Would you like me to tell Michael that when you get your wings you will try and visit/contact him?" John nodded and smiled benignly. I repeated to Michael what I had said to John, and Michael said that he would like John to try and visit him. John smiled happily and sank back on his pillow.

To return to Wednesday - John's demeanour and determination to get to the back door, and his cheerful "hello" as a greeting are very much in character with his friendship and respect for Michael. If John even got a whiff that Michael would be here, John would move. So - things have moved on, John has stuck to his arrangement of contacting Michael (without - so far - having to travel to Christchurch, New Zealand.) Have contacts now been made to make another one easier next time? Have changes occurred in Michael to help things along - if that is what is in the plan of things? My experience would be that in the next would things come if they are needed. I do not know the future, but John's attitude was that man cannot get out of the mess that he is in without the help of the next world. He would always try to help anybody.
It is good that he is getting stronger and can now speak to us.

Michael Cocks writes, 11th April, 2006: I received the above today, and immediately after reading it, I booted up my computer. A dark screen came up with words on the right at the bottom: "I'm not dead." The computer screen froze, so that I had to start the computer up again. Back came the words, "I'm not dead". Preceding these words in pink italics was the word "pink". The words in fact were advertising an album entitled "I'm not dead" by a UK singer/composer who calls herself "Pink".
Nevertheless after just having read talk about John contacting me here in New Zealand, and noting that I do not recall any such messages before, and certainly none after, I find the synchronicity highly meaningful.
